Meet My Registry

I'm not sure if this is actually a true story, but due to an old New England tradition my grandmother received a teaspoon with her initials for every birthday until she turned 21. (I can in fact attest to the 21 spoons, I'm not sure if this is actually a New England tradition.) My Mom had a similar period when we were little where she would gift my brother and me with a few pieces of a flatware set from Tiffany's. My brother's pattern, Audubon, is utterly beautiful.

Not surprisingly, I'm really picky about flatware. The fork especially should have gracefully sloping tines, perfectly spaced, and be of the right heft. It's always fun to browse the flatware collections at Crate and Barrel (truly a rite of passage for people in their 20s and 30s), and while I like some of their designs well enough, I have never found something that speaks to me. Until today.

One of my daily reads is Dooce, a blog that is not for the faint of heart. I like her personal style, and today she posted an image of a flatware set she received from her sister-in-law as a wedding gift.

I saw the photo and thought, what a great idea! My Mom brought me back a similar hammered silver spoon when she and Dad went on their first vacation in 20 years - to France! Unfortunately, the set that Dooce owns appears to be out of production, but by the magic of the internet, I found a similar set at Neiman Marcus.

Does anyone have a cure for expensive taste?

Unfortunately it is called "reality," but I am not one to talk...
