I've fielded a few questions about the swine flu lately, and they have only served to point out how little I know about medicine. In fact, yesterday I told my mother it was no big deal because the media likes to fear-monger. Well folks, American officials have now declared a public health emergency. Whoops. I will say I am still unsure what my answer would be to a question they love to pose to us medical students:

• Say there was a pandemic flu with a high mortality rate and all emergency responders were being called in. You're at home with your spouse and children. Would you go?

Thoughts? I'd probably go in at this point. In the meantime, remember to wash those hands!
