Weekend Round-Up
Once I had "sobered up" enough (two cups of coffee later...) I hopped in the car and drove 360 miles to NYC. Tom met me and the car and we drove to Michael's to pick-up our hacked subway sign. Lesson learned: Tom's faith + Anna's design skillz + Gary's insider knowledge = awesomeness.

We also went to Whole Foods, and then it was home for a delicious meal of skirt steak with paprika butter, couscous, sugar snap peas, half moon cookies, and cabernet sauvignon. Lesson learned: Tom + broiler + kosher salt = very, very good.
On Saturday, Tom and I trekked pseudo-upstate to Woodbury Commons, where we dropped $250 in free money at the Williams-Sonoma outlet. But all was not spent on us, nay. I picked up a sunshine yellow mixer and mixing bowl for my brother, Bonnie, La Belle Cutie, and Full Throttle, so all was not lost. And Tom of course found 4 pairs of jeans for $100. Tom had the most fun I think because he got to try out a new GPS he bought to replace the one that was stolen from my car in Philadelphia, during a residency interview, no less. (Lesson learned: break-in + car towing + Philadelphia + rain + residency interview = soggy, stressed, sobbing Anna.) The gizmo is neat in that you can connect it to your phone so that the GPS is essentially a glorified speaker phone. Oh, and you can be fun icons like a deer, or a monster truck, or a bottle rocket, or a beach ball, or... Lesson learned: Tom + discounts + new gizmos = easily amused Tom.
We high-tailed it back to NYC and off we headed to Brooklyn for a pre-Valentine's dinner at Madiba, the only South African restaurant in NYC. It did not disappoint. Then down the block we tromped in the cold to see The Magnetic Fields in concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It turns out that the brother of one of our wedding guests is in the band, so he gifted us with free tickets and backstage passes. I loved the show, especially a line that went something like "I've never been to Paris, but I'll make Paris wherever you are." The band couldn't have been nicer when we said hello, and home we were by midnight. My favorite song of the night was "All the Umbrellas in London." Lesson learned: Anna + date planning + Tom + amazingly cool and generous wedding guests = romantic times.
Sunday was Valentine's day, and I woke up to the most beautiful bouquet Tom had made. (Okay, every bouquet he makes is awesome, and usually includes tulips and freesia. Not only do they look nice, they smell divine. And well, okay, he actually gave this to me 2 days before Valentine's Day, and the pictures are from two days after Valentine's, after a 6 hour car ride.) Lesson learned: Tom + flowers = a son whose mother taught him well.

Sunday was also my father's early birthday party - Happy Birthday, Dad, today's the day! - so off I trekked to my mother's house to help her roast a duck and finish a lemon meringue pie. What fun! There is no possible way I could some up the day other than to say that only my mother could turn a Martha Stewart recipe into a success, especially on the first try. Unfortunately, the guest of honor was quite sick with what I assume to be seasonal flu, but after I forced a few glasses of orange juice on him, he made an effort to hang. It was fun going over my "rank list" with him. La Belle Cutie gave me a Sleeping Beauty tattoo for Valentine's, and Tom also gave me this book and spent the day soaking up the water left in my car after the break-in 2 weeks ago. Lesson learned: Everyone + birthday pie = a whole lotta love.

I had Monday off in honor of Presidents' Day (first time in four years of medical school), so I drove slowly back Upstate in time for dinner. Lesson learned: Anna + Upstate = I miss my family.
Happy (belated) Valentine's Day!
Happy (belated) President's Day!
Happy Birthday, Dad! I love you.
