#332

A lot of times I wonder why I still read bridal blogs. Granted we've got some time before the wedding (somewhere shy of 5 months), but I'm pretty set on the decisions we've made and reading the blogs is really just a grand waste of time. (I'm actually kind of digging reading about the weirdo diseases right now, like the connective tissues and hypersensitivities. Oh, and by the way, for the one person who's interested, I'm completing my Sub-I in pediatric hematology-oncology and not the pediatric ICU. I'm pretty cool with this, actually, having volunteered in peds heme-onc before medical school. Two weeks on the heart attack service makes your emotions pretty untouchable. Or is it because I have three weeks until the end of third year?!!!!) Anyway, back to the point. I think I continued to read the blogs because maybe twice a month you encounter a genius idea. Herewith, today's brilliance:

Pew lanterns! Yes! We are getting married in a fairly plain church. I remember how magical Christmas Eve services would be at 11 PM with the candles all lit along the high windowsills. We're getting married at 5 PM in October (digression: my favorite song- seriously - is playing on Pandora. Life is sweet.). It's been probably my biggest secret dream to have the candles lit for the service. Being a Unitarian church, I'm expecting a 50-50 response, either they won't care or they'll charge way too much despite the fact that we are members because that's how they roll. I was never too sold on decorating the church with flowers, 1) because of the expense, and 2) they didn't seem to fit an October evening wedding.

And then I read about pew lanterns on Weddingbee Pro. Brilliant. I've always loved these lanterns from Jamali Garden, or this lantern from Ikea or this one that reminds me of Tom (don't ask). Throw in some battery-operated LED tealights if you're concerned about fire safety. And. You're done. Magic.

Unitarians are awesome - of course you'll be able to have your candles! If I belonged to a church, it would most definitely be UU.

My fave Unitarian story comes from my gal Mikaela, whose high school valedictorian speech was about being an atheist and is now a UU Sunday School teacher.

That's my kinda community ;-).
