The Backbeat

An observation: suprisingly, I don't miss the OR. But then my trauma beeper (continues to) goes off, and I realize I miss trauma. Everyday something different, always radically so. But then I remember the back stories of my patients, and the night seems a lot darker, scarier, and longer.

I found a radio station up here that plays my Dad's kind of radio programs, such as the World Cafe with David Dye. All of which got me thinking about wedding music. This is a detail I love thinking about, because more than any other detail, it ensures whether the party succeeds or not. I like the idea of a DJ because of the variety of music they can spin, and I run towards the eclectic. Here's a few songs currently on my "wedding playlist." I want the wedding to have a real insider NY feel, plenty of early 80s funk/hip hop, with some classic rock and roll thrown in. (Not that these songs necessarily reflect that.) Feel free to recommend some more:

1. Northern Sky, by Nick Drake (possibly for my processional)
2. Across the Universe, by the Beatles (possibly for the recessional)
3. Wonderful World, by Sam Cooke (you know the one, "Don't know much about
history/Don't know much trigonometry" since we're such nerds! Possibly for the first
dance/more likely a "couple's dance" since I hate being the center of dancing attention.)
4. Daughter, by Loudon Wainwright, III (father-daughter dance, unlikely to be one)
5. Show Me, by Mint Royale
6. Funky Kingston, by Toots and the Maytals (gotta have some reggae)
7. The Seed, 2.0, by the Roots (perhaps too risque, lyrically-speaking, but the most awesome
sample ever. Period.)
8. La Vida Tombola, by Manu Chao
9. Come on Eileen, by Dexys Midnight Runners (a Harvard tradition, at every party for four
years straight - and I went to a lot of parties)
10. A Kiss to Build a Dream On, by Louis Armstrong (possibly for the first dance)
11. Stardust, not sure whose version
12. Electric Avenue, by Eddy Grant (one of the best songs of all time)
13. Wishing Well, by Terence Trent D'Arby
14. Dancing in the Dark, by Bruce Springsteen
15. Joy to the World, by Three Dog Night
16. I Turn my Camera On, by Spoon
17. White Lines, by Grandmaster Flash (also risque in the lyrics department)
18. Rappers Delight, by the Sugarhill Gang
19. Rapture, by Blondie (speaking of Rappers Delight)
20. Need You Tonight, by INXS
21. What You Waitin' For, by the Jungle Brothers
22. Any and everything ever sung by Otis Redding
