For a few years in junior high school, I did something absolutely in character for the child of free-spirited yet hyper intelligent beatniks cum hippies: I had my very own garden plot at the New York Botanical Gardens. And I grew strange stuff, like bok choy and kohlrabi. (Have you ever seen kohlrabi in a grocery store? Exactly.) Both sets of grandparents had green thumbs, but I think it skips several generations, because I decidedly do not. But I'd like to learn. I have this fantasy that I will grow hydrangeas and container strawberries on our NYC fire escape (illegal by the way), and herbs on our kitchen windowsill. My favorite idea, though, involves the "beach house" in Philly. For a while now, I've been interested in an ornamental orange tree. Turns out, they need a lot of light, and Tom's studio has that in spades. Little Green Notebook just posted a feature about Calamondin orange trees. What do you think?
