The Wow* Factor

My mother loves "tag sales" as we call them in New England ("yard sales" or "garage sales" for everyone else). Just like her penchant for hopping out of the car to dance to Bruce Springsteen on the side of the road (it's true - it happened in the 80's!), what used to embarrass me to no end is now one of my true loves. Mom has a way of sending you magical little gifts when you least expect it, mostly culled from tag sales, something that I would very much like to learn how to do.

A few months ago, she bought me an entire set of retro dishes for $15. I wasn't sure what I thought at first, but I heart them so much. In fact, I've thought more than once about using the pattern for the wedding invitations. (Collective groan.) Incidentally, I took this photo from a website charging $15 just for the teacup and saucer alone. Nice work, Mom!

So here's how this will all tie together. I'm in love with the idea of the short wedding dress - very 50's - because when I thought about weddings as a little girl, I always thought about the 50's. (Anyone want to psychoanalyze that?) On my ever-expanding internet search, I stumbled across the wedding of Lena Corwin that had been featured in the Spring 2006 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings (aka this bride's Bible). I am in pig-heaven. There is so much to talk about regarding this wedding, but I'll list just a few highlights:

a) The bride's dress cost all of $35.
b) I am totally jazzed about using fabric panels as photo backdrops (because who can afford a $1600 photo booth anyway?)
c) The flags would be a nice alternative to my pom poms, and I'm sure the paper is from my favorite store in the world (ask Tom and Ed), Paper Source.
d) Vintage plates, enough said.

Seriously, if I could have the backyard wedding of my dreams, it would be very closely modeled after this. It reminds me of my Mom. Enjoy.

*PS: "Wow" upside down = "Mom"

Dude, I totally thought that the woman in the short dress was you at first. Then I thought, but that looks professional, and that's not Tom. These are my though processes when there are tons of dishes in the sink and I'm awake during the wee hours, wasting time on the intertubes.

I do think this is a great wedding, personal and whimsical all at once.
I like the dress a lot!
