#433

Hi. Remember me? Where have I not been to in these last few weeks? Thankfully, residency interviews are now finished, and I'm a bit wiser, fatter, and less stressed than before. It is so delicious to be in your home with all of your things after two months apart. And it is an amazing feeling to just concentrate on medicine and patients again and, oh, working out. (Ahem, 10 pounds, you have met your match.) Maybe some day I'll write a "things I learned on the interview trail" post, kind of like my tips for medical students post. But before I do, there's always the wedding recap to get to, and yet I'm hesitant out of fear of shaking the magical dust off the thing and opening the Pandora's box of regrets. Weddings it turns out are a lot like life: messy, gigantic, joyous, and frustrating at the same time. But you already knew that.

There's a wishful possibility that we will find ourselves in NYC come June, where we will stay for the next three to four years, and together at that. My mind has turned to the minuscule size of NYC apartments, and the often shabby condition they are in. I was impressed by this renter-friendly kitchen tile backsplash project featured on Young House Love today.

I love the idea of peel-and-stick backsplash tiles that are removable and can personalize a horrid NYC rental kitchen. However, I'm not so keen on stainless steel anything because it reminds me of scary places like anatomy lab and the morgue. And those are places I like to leave solidly at work. (And also the reason why, Tom, we registered for brushed stainless steel cookware and electrics, not because pure stainless steel shows fingerprints easily as I suggest. No, I have a phobia of stainless steel.) Anyway, a couple of possibilities:

(Source - the pattern makes the stainless steel less creepy)

(Source for the previous two images - I love the copper color, or the black and white mosaic, and especially the gray, although copper plus brushed stainless steel does not sound like a winning combination.)

Randomly, I've also been digging on these retro breadboxes (not something I cared about until I met Tom) from Wesco:

And after several weeks of careful thought, have decided that clear cookie jars will be my best bet for kitchen canisters. Baking as much as I do, having a bug-free way (hello NYC!) to store flour that is easily accessible would be awesome, like so:

Although, I love these white box canisters high up on the top shelf. With my new Cricut-hacking skills, I think I could totally recreate this look:

Of course, I realize now that I have spent so much time talking about NYC, I've jinxed myself for the match. Well, a girl can dream, right?

Oh, and I just purchased this $18 programmable 4-cup coffee maker. My life has vastly improved.

Ooh, I love this post! I'm totally obsessed with the idea of removeable backsplash tiles now - the copper ones are GREAT! It's funny, I totally get your stainless phobia given the rest of your life - how odd the way those things from our days seep into the rest of our world.

Great to "hear" from you again :-).

Maybe when you're done with your tiny-ass kitchen, you can come rescue mine!
