So where have I been? Home now with a brutal cold that kept me up all night (I'll spare you the details). Home, taking my first sick day in an incredibly complicated system. And yes, it's a day I must pay back. So here's some poetry about my life:

You make the thing because you love the thing
and you love the thing because someone else loved it
enough to make you love it.
And with that your heart like a tent peg pounded
toward the earth’s core.
And with that your heart on a beam burns
through the ionosphere.
And with that you go to work.

Exerpted from "An Horation Nation"
by Thomas Lux

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

I need to file those poems for those 'what was I thinking?!?' days. I'm sorry you're sick. I wish you were closer so we could bring you soup, although something tells me if you are sick enough for YOU to stay home, you probably wouldn't feel like eating anyhow. Get better!
